Vacancy: Board Chair
Are you the tactical advocate for self-determination we're looking for? Can you balance activism and pragmatism to achieve our goals? Become a board member at Trans In Eigen Hand!
What you will do
As a board member, you are responsible for helping shape TIEH's vision and strategy. Our board members are often active in several of our projects as well. Depending on your skills, this could involve policy, lobbying, speaking, tech dev, or organizing. Together with the other board members, you will work on professionalizing the organization and maintaining partnerships.
As Chair, you are not just a board member, but also the face of the foundation. Your role also includes:
- Chairing board meetings
- Guiding the direction: does what we do contribute to the mission? And are we taking on too much at once?
- Being the external face — to the press, politics, healthcare providers, and partner organizations
- Keeping an eye on how people are doing, both within the board and beyond
- Noticing what isn't getting done and assigning it somewhere
- Conducting onboarding, check-in, and exit interviews
The external face
In principle, speaking on behalf of TIEH goes through the Chair. This means visibility with the press, politicians, and healthcare parties.
If you're not comfortable with that part of the role, that's no reason not to apply. The board can also assign spokesperson duties to another board member or a designated spokesperson. Let us know, and we'll discuss it.
Profile
We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic Chair with an affinity for our community. Someone who can inspire others and has a good sense of the most tactical move to take the next step toward our goals. But also someone who enjoys collaboration. Board experience is not required: everything you need to know to get started is in our board manual, and we will take the time to train you.
Furthermore, we ask for:
- A passion for and commitment to the transgender community.
- A hands-on mentality and creative thinking skills.
- A strategic mindset.
- Experience in advocacy, policy development, or project management is a plus.
- Tech-savviness is a plus.
- Willingness to invest an average of 16 hours per month.
About Trans In Eigen Hand
Trans In Eigen Hand is a small, goal-oriented volunteer organization dedicated to the autonomy of transgender and gender-diverse people in Dutch gender care. We work in front of and behind the scenes to enable gender care based on informed consent, train healthcare workers, and create tools that help transgender people and healthcare providers navigate the complex care system.
The board meets online once every two months.
What you get in return
A better world, the joy of working with kind and driven people, and of course, great board experience.
What you don't get is money. TIEH board members are not paid; however, we do reimburse expenses.
There is no fixed term of office (yet). You stay as long as it fits, and in November and December, the whole board reviews how things are going and who will continue. You can step down at any time; we will arrange a smooth handover together.
How to apply
