Trans In Eigen Hand is a foundation with volunteers throughout the Netherlands. Since 2021, we have been fighting, together with our partners, for self-determination in transgender care.
who we are
No office, no gatekeepers, just the people it affects
We are a dedicated group of volunteers spread across the country. Trans people, doctors, parents, or partners. No one does this full-time. What binds us is that we all, in our own way, have to deal with this care.
Trans and non-binary people
Who know the healthcare system from the inside because they had to go through it themselves.
Doctors
Who provide this care themselves and know what is needed in the consultation room.
Parents of trans people
Who saw firsthand what waiting does to someone.

Who believe that self-determination is not a favor you have to earn.
how we work
Pragmatic in approach,
unyielding in our vision
We work with healthcare providers
Not against them. A GP who hesitates is not an opponent but someone who didn't have proper support yet. So we write guides, provide continuing education, and answer questions — instead of shouting from the sidelines.
We build coalitions where possible
Alone you are a club, together you are a movement. We are co-founders of the Transgender Care Coalition and work together with municipalities, GGDs (Municipal Health Services), and grassroots organizations.
We don't give up
When we want something, we keep fighting until it's there. The taboo on hormone care via the GP was persistent. After five years of action through good conversations, training, and of course our guide, the taboo is a thing of the past.
We find the boundaries and push them until our vision fits within them.

Where we come from
2021
Founded after a TransZorgNU protest in Nijmegen.
A group of protest attendees decides to move forward together as an action group with a focus on GPs and informed consent. Less on the streets, more in the clinic.

We publish what we stand for: self-determination, access, and a role for primary care.

First webinar series for GPs
Together with the Quartermaster for Transgender Care and Peter Leusink, we host our first series of webinars. Titled "Transgender Care in General Practice," we explained what a GP can already do for trans people and how to set up an inclusive practice.

First health insurance choice guide live
Every year, the contracts of health insurers and healthcare providers change. Because of this, you can suddenly lose your coverage. TIEH decides to collect all the information so that trans people can choose the right insurance.

First webinar series for youth and family professionals
Together with the Quartermaster for Transgender Care and Check-in Gender Care, we organize a new webinar series, now focused on basic mental healthcare (basisGGZ).

Campaign for a GGD Trans Clinic in Rotterdam
With a manifesto signed by many national and regional organizations, we call on the municipality and the GGD to stop abandoning trans people. Unfortunately, three motions fail due to Leefbaar Rotterdam.
2025
Guide for hormone care via the GP
Together with Transvisie and the NHG Expert Group on Sexuality, we launch a guide that helps GPs start or continue hormone care. The guideline mentioned the possibility but didn't give GPs enough tools; we are proud to fill that gap.
2026
Rotterdam says YES
After the 2026 municipal elections, the new council decides to allocate a structural budget for a GGD Trans Clinic in the region.
