Rotterdam, June 12, 2025 – Today marks the release of the guideline “Guidance for Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy in Primary Care”, a practical document that supports general practitioners in independently guiding trans and gender-diverse individuals who desire gender-affirming hormone therapy.

The guideline was developed by Transgenderzorg Utrecht, Stichting Trans in Eigen Hand, the NHG Expert Group Sexual Health, and Transvisie. It offers a clear medical framework based on (inter)national standards and aligns with the existing Quality Standard for Transgender Care – Somatic (2018).

Trans Care More Accessible in Primary Care

Increasingly, trans and gender-diverse individuals are approaching their general practitioners with care questions regarding gender-affirming hormone therapy. General practitioners can safely and independently provide this care – provided they are sufficiently equipped to do so.

This guideline offers clear guidance for:

  • Approach, Decision-Making, and Risk Assessment

  • Information Provision and Informed Consent

  • Feminizing and Masculinizing Hormone Therapy

  • Pausing or Discontinuing Treatment

  • Collaboration with Other Healthcare Professionals

Reliable Care Close to Home

Many general practitioners already have experience with medications also used in gender care, such as estrogens, testosterone, or anti-androgens. This guideline builds upon that experience and enables safe, informed, and accessible care within the familiar setting of the general practitioner's practice.
